Sedation Dentist - Putting Patients At Their Ease

Posted by DrWheeler | Filed under , , , ,

To ameliorate the pain and anxiety caused by dentistry consider a sedation dentist. Their care guarantees a more thorough and less unpleasant experience.

Beyond the pain and discomfort associated with dental work there is an equally unpleasant aspect that deters many people from undergoing the procedures they need to maintain a healthy mouth. It is the anxiety and stress that is experienced in anticipation and during an appointment that causes this reticence. As a result many Americans do not or rarely go to dental check-ups and cleanings. Unfortunately this resistance to going to the doctor results in far worse conditions when a person finally does go. The suggestion is for a person to receive a check up and cleaning at least twice a year but the reality is people go once every couple of years, if that. On the bright side there is now a field of dentistry that addresses these concerns. It is called a sedation dentist and it is the solution that many people will welcome when it comes to oral hygiene. There are several aspects to this type of treatment.

First of all a sedation dentist does just what one would expect. They use a variety of methods to sedate a patient but rarely go so far as putting them to sleep. Instead a person is slightly conscious throughout the procedure but will not remember or feel anything from the treatment. This puts a patient at ease regarding what is happening in their mouth and also removes any lingering trauma from highly invasive surgeries like root canal or wisdom tooth extraction.

Other than putting people at ease a procedure done by a sedation dentist leaves less residual pain. After the sedative has begun to wear off a patient will become more alert. The anesthetic effect will still be working to some extent in the body. This leaves a window in which the body is not feeling pain in which it is possible to obtain and administer the necessary aftercare medication that has been prescribed. In this way there is never any down time in which discomfort takes place.

Besides the obvious benefit to the client a sedation dentist is able to more effectively do his or her job when a patient is subdued. A patient who is not at ease is very difficult to treat. Anxiety causes a person to not fully open their mouth and very frequently makes them jerk in anticipation of the pain they expect. Even administration of Novocain or other analgesics is not enough the make someone comfortable because it is the expectation of pain that causes them to jerk. Other times people cannot take it long and force the doctor to stop mid-procedure. This creates other problems and also makes it almost impossible to do an excellent job. By being sedated a person becomes a breeze to treat. They are relaxed and so their mouth can be opened more fully. Also because they are subdued they are unlikely to move or interrupt the procedure. These benefits allow the doctor to do a far more thorough and superior job then he or she would be able to do on an alert client, and they are able to do it in a shorter time.

Come see how Dr. Wheeler can put you at ease and give you a reason to smile again.

Dental Implants Are Breaking Tradition

Posted by DrWheeler | Filed under , ,

Missing teeth create a puzzling problem. They can cause other teeth to shift, affect your diet and even make you look years older than you are! But with dental implants, you can pick up the pieces after the loss of a tooth and get on with your life. Dental implants work like your natural teeth to restore the missing link in your smile. A dental implant is a dental restoration that's implanted into your jawbone to harbor a dental crown, dental bridge and dentures. Of course, you can choose among all sorts of dental restorations to replace your missing teeth. But unlike traditional dentures, dental implants are a permanent solution to your problem and tend to last longer than your other replacement options. Dental implants are also very appealing -- they look so much like real teeth, most people won't know the difference!

Dental implants have marked the era of an exciting time in dentistry, so it's understandable that you'd want to know more. If you're interested in dental implants, 520-745-0030 http://www.smilesaz.com/default.asp

5 Smile Aging Habits

Posted by DrWheeler | Filed under , , , , ,

Avoid aging your smile by avoiding these five habits. Having a beautiful, youthful smile is one of the most important piece of looking young and energetic. A nice smile will keep you feeling young and happy. Other people will react to your smile too, and be more likely to smile back

1. Avoid Stains

Some of our favorite foods can, unfortunately, cause stains on our teeth. Foods like red wine, soda and coffee all can dull the whiteness of teeth, leaving a not-so-bright smile. Try to brush soo after eating darker foods to preserve your smile's natural brightness.

2. Teeth are for Eating

Some people will use their teeth for anything - from tearing open bags to opening cans and bottles. Each time you use your teeth as a tool, you risk damaging them. This damage could be in the chips or breakage. This kind of pressure on teeth could also disrupt the flow of nutrients to your teeth, which could cause your teeth to change colors (and not for the better - think gray).

3. Good Oral Care

Of course, protecting your smile involves good oral care. You should be sure to change your toothbrush frequently and floss daily. Problems with gums (such as gums receding) can change the way your smile looks -- not to mention good orla hygiene just might help your avoid inflammation that can cause age-related problems.

4. Remember to Smile

As we age, we tend to forget to smile enough. Kids smile all the time, just to show their pure joy at being in the world. We grown-ups tend to forget to smile. Picture two people in your head. Make them around 75. Picture one smiling and one not frowning. Who looks the youngest, most energetic? Easy, the person smiling. Smiling just shows that we are engaged with life and enjoying ourselves -- all signs of youth.

5. Don't Smoke

Smoking is a terrible thing to do to your smile. Not only does smoking stain your teeth, but it also ages your skin prematurely. Smokers, typically, look years older than their true age.
Don't let the color of your teeth age you. Come find out how we can give you some of those years back!!
